I think I’d pay to see that one in the Hollywood Bowl. With a suitable Faraday cage around me, of course. Maybe with some noise cancelling headphones to limit to about 85dB, too — tinnitus in one ear is enough.
Were people that much better educated back then? I’d never heard of the Anvil Chorus, and knew very little about Verdi.
