Parents give their kids all sorts of weird names. I actually heard a mother in a supermarket calling her son….. his name was Keanu!. Maybe not an unusual name in Hawaii but definitely odd for the UK.
I never cared what they called me…as long as it wasn’t late for dinner or payday !
When I refereed football ( soccer ) I was called a lot of names – some of them very creative. And it just wasn’t in English, either. Great way to learn all the wrong foreign words. I once tossed a Japanese goalkeeper out of a match for questioning my legitimacy in Japanese and casting aspersions on my mother. After the match, his coach asked me where I learned to speak Japanese. I laughed and told him I didn’t, but I understood by the keeper’s tone and inflection what he had said. The coach thought that was funny, and never did enlighten any on the Japanese players on his team. They were very careful and respectful in dealing with me, thereafter.
I think people should mind their own business what parents wish to call their children. They are no worse than what celebrities name their kids.
I don’t go a bundle on my own name (Annelise) Everybody thinks it’s beautiful but I wish I had a more common name. Plus, nobody can spell it! ! So annoying.
(The looks I got when I confused the German word for “hot and muggy” with a slang world for “homosexual”. They differ only by an umlaut, and to this day I don’t remember which is which, so I try not to comment on the weather during the summer.)
I don’t understand why parents give their kids weird, bizarre names. There are all ready plenty of unusual names that are appropriate for human beings. Why not use those?
