Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for September 23, 2016
Transcript:
Arlo: You weren't always so camera shy! Remember the used darkroom we found in the want ads? Janis: "You don't understand! I was twenty-something years old then!" Janis: Now, my body is fat and saggy and blotchy and...and OLD! Arlo: You're right - I don't understand!

See her body notion is opposite of his. She exaggerates, he under rates her body. She just needs to not hunch over like in P3. Not healthy for the back.

It’s a cultural problem. I’ve been in a predominantly female profession for over 40 yrs, and I hear that complaint all the time – (getting fat, etc… ). It’s a cultural expectation fostered by media and fashion industry from the time they are little. (IMHO…)

When a man looks into a mirror, he sees Fabio. When a woman looks into a mirror she sees Roseanne Barr.

I think she looks chunkier in her 20 something. And yes she could knock off pounds by standing up straight it pulls the stomach in. That’s what those weight loss pics do , show the person hunched over to show belly fat then up straight with shoulders back and walla no tummy….

I’m assuming that the purpose of the “used darkroom” was to develop photos that could not be reliably sent to a film developing lab without some kind of “over exposure”? Or am I off base?
Today, digital technology avoids what people perceived as embarrassment and supports the erasure of anything really embarrassing.

Does she not understand that, with age, a man – a proper man – comes to see that hot and old do indeed go quite well together. In fact, old has some distinct advantages over young. He’s still got some of those old photos. And he still likes what he sees of her now.

Wife does the same thing to me, She sees herself getting older and not as attractive, I see her as the lovely 18 year old I married way back when…

@ScullyUFO et. al., Home darkrooms were for developing film negatives, most often of black & white photos. It consisted of a tank into which you poured various chemicals, usually a ‘developer’, ‘stop-bath’, and ‘fixer’. Not all were pleasant smelling. That’s why Janice is turning her nose away from the chemical bottle in panel 2. The exposed film had to be removed from the roll and mounted in the tank in complete darkness, but once in the tank the rest of the operation could be done in the light. A separate device was needed for producing positive images from the dry negative onto photo paper and further developing. The most popular reasons for home photo processing were 1) cost af professional development and 2) Ooo La La. Commercial developers frowned on the Ooo La La’s and might report them to the authorities if TOO Ooo.

The beauty of this wonderful strip is that it always leaves something to the imagination. For instance where do you suppose the products of the used darkroom are now?

Janis, Arlo is going elsewhere if you don’t start appreciating his affections and desire

Couples often went into a darkroom to see what develops. Sometimes it was negative.

There are lots of people everywhere who wish they had a picture of their mother or aunt or sister or other beloved woman but don’t because she hated having her picture taken. It is sad that we find it harder to hear the words of those who love us just as we are then the voices of the beauty industry.

Looks like Janice does not like the smell of the stop bath concentrate (glacial acetic acid – smells like vinegar, but much stronger).

When I was a kid my dad had a darkroom set up. Three square vats, lots of chemical and something exotic to me as a 5 year old kid – a red light bulb. At some point some of the red scraped off and he touched it up with mom’s nail polish.
He used to carry a lot of cameras if we went somewhere. 35 mm with black and white film, ditto with color, movie camera and as we went along other cameras. We would develop some of the black and white photos in the bathroom with the above setup. I am sure I was more of a problem than a help, but he was always glad to have me along to “help”.
