I already know the best okra recipe ever. It involves one 1/4-lb. patty of hamburger, cooked on an outdoor grill, placed on a bun, with some onion and cheese and ketchup and mustard. Add a small helping of chips and a cold drink, and enjoy.
Great Seafood Gumbo makers runs in my family … My grandmother made it with the standard ingredients, but spiced it up with “Oh, just a little of this and a little of that.” My mom also makes a fantastic pot of gumbo, as does my wife, Mrs. Plugger. Frozen okra works just fine there … of course, four pounds of shrimps and a pound of crabmeat help a little, too. As to other ways to enjoy this great vegetable … we love fried okra, okra and field peas (with a little ham or bacon in it), stewed okra and tomatoes and even plain ol’ boiled okra with a big gob of butter on top (fresh is usually best with this). One thing to keep in mind … smaller here is better; large okra is usually tough and not very tasty.
I should have added that I grew up on a bayou in northwest Florida … as a kid, shrimp was cheap and plentiful, and we used to go crabbing all the time. We tied a rope to a large washtub and the other end around our waist and pulled it behind us as we waded in knee-deep water and scooped up blue crabs by the bucketful. Go home, clean ‘em and my grandma would fry up the best fried crabs ever … or make a big pot of gumbo or sometimes crabcakes. Those were the days!

ak4mc - Sounds like a great recipe for okra! My sister & our (deceased) mother enjoyed fried okra. I guess I take after Dad, never did care for it.
