In 19th century Hungary, impoverished poets in Budapest coffee houses would scribble sonnets on a napkin in lieu of paying for their drinks. As punishment for not paying a $100 taxi fare, a judge ordered Victoria Bscom of Lake County, Ohio, to walk 30 miles, the length of her cab journey, or go to jail! The praying mantis has only one ear!

I’m guessing Victoria chose the former? At least she got her exercise, right? (Lake County is also where Latter-day Saint historical city Kirtland is. Church’s first temple is there although now owned by splinter group Community of Christ and the non-CofC public can go through its interior; completely different from LDS temples.)

Hopefully she had to pay the $100 to the cabbie also
quig149 about 8 years ago
Not an outrageous bill at all. On a trip like that, you’re actually paying for the cabbie’s round trip as they’re not allowed to pickup someone coming back if out of their licensed area.

So did the distilleries accept the sonnets from the coffeehouse proprietors when they needed to restock the bar?

Which would you rather do in lieu of paying money: write poetry or walk 30 miles?
Petemejia77 about 8 years ago
Rather have a napkin doodle from a famous Hungarian artist.

What a stupid sentence – how did making the defendant walk that distance compensate the cabbie?
This wasn’t about justice but vengeance. Justice would be making her work and hand over the money to the cabbie plus an extra 50% as a tip.
