    Lynn’sNote:

Before I had my own business, I dropped my son at daycare and went to work like most other single moms. When Aaron was sick, I had, of course, to leave work, pick him up, and take him home. I felt guilty for leaving my job. I felt guilty for resenting the interruption in my day, and I felt guilty for not being a stay at home mom.

Why is it always up to the female parent to solve those problems. In my day, we weren’t hired for our jobs on a part-time basis and I needed to wait 17 years, until they left high school, before I could go back on full-time/part-time (without guilt).

Probably more about how essential is the job to others. If Elly was a nurse and John was an auto mechanic, John would probably be the one to go pick up Michael, as his cars could wait but she would need to be giving round-the-clock attention to intensive care patients.

Well, this is me….complaining and venting….then calming down and getting it done with grace.

It’s a joke, people. Haven’t you heard of Murphy’s Law?

Elly know’s it the flu, meaning it’s not some mystery ailment (no need to panic), but several days of Michael being sick.

There were days when I had to stop working and pick up our son from school when he was sick, simply because we were a one car family. It’s never convenient in terms of work.

I was lucky to have a mother in law who was always willing to take care of a sick grandchild. I wasn’t working, but I went back to college when my two kids were young and in grade school. She was the greatest, and I miss her. Best MIL ever.

You don’t get the flu symptoms all at once. . It builds and builds until you are not well. There is nothing to do but stay in bed and drink fluids. No need to panic. Lunch meetings are stupid. Lunch is one of the most needed breaks during a hectic work day. Any boss who has lunch meetings is a jerk.

Miss a lunch meeting ? Oh, darn the bad luck !

    .

Never schedule a lunch meeting, unless someone else is buying !

Otherwise, they are a colossal waste of time, meant only to pad the expense account.

    .

At the office, when we were on deadlines and “up against it”, I’d have lunch or dinner catered in, so people didn’t have to leave but insisted that they take at least 30 minutes to enjoy their food and relax, rather than trying to eat and work at the same time..

Leaving work for a sick kid is something that can’t be helped and no parent should feel guilty about.

Leaving to bail your kid or spouse out of jail is another story !

I was blessed with a fairly healthy child during his school years. I don’t remember having to take off work much at all to attend him. He had frequently ear aches when he was small, but we had a sitter who was willing to keep him even when he was sick. (She even kept him while he had chicken pox because he was exposed to it at her house, and all of her charges had it. She took care of 6 kids aged 1 to 4, all with the chicken pox.) Once he had his tonsils & adenoids removed, all of that stopped and he was rarely sick. He still is and he’s 39.

The Assistant is a gem!One of the never-ending emotions of being a mother is always feeling guilty about not doing something or worrying about making the wrong decision. Unfortunately, it never goes away, even when the kids do.

To say nothing of the needed decontamination between dealing with an influenza case and climbing back into a patient’s mouth with necessary injuries involved.

The flu card is much over-used in most cases. If you’re suffering from influenza, you probably can’t get out of bed and you may have to be hospitalized.I worked with people who stayed away from work 2-3 times each winter with the flu 2 or 3 days at a time.Probably a cold virus, but flu sounds more convincing for the boss!

My coworkers daughter was sick a couple of weeks ago. She’s actually away at college several states away, so instead of leaving work, coworker was just calling her to see how she was. It doesn’t matter how old they get, when they’re sick they’re Mom’s baby.
