To be honest, the ONLY reason the NFL doesn’t play on Friday nights is because of the competition with high school football, and the only reason they don’t play on Saturdays (day or night) is because of the competition of “student-athlete” football. (Sorry, I can never see the term “student athlete” without laughing…….I meant college football!)
With all his campus appearances, I was constantly surprised George Carlin never included in his list of oxymorons, “athletic scholarship”. The proper word is “athlon” the prize for which the athlete competes, and the root word of athlete and athletics. Scholarship has negligible influence on the subject.

if I remember correctly the NFL in its early years did play on Saturday but moved to Sunday with the advent of television.
