My neighbor must be a hypochondriac. She’s had 17 surgeries in two years and owes the hospital $42,000 so far.

But Doc, I know I have it. I took a quiz in the National Enquirer.

My Ex took a quiz in Cosmo.

How does he know he’s a hypochondriac? His gynecologist told him so…

@Coyoty, placebos really work. But the recipient has to believe in them. The ethics of prescribing them is tricky, however. One clinically proven method however is this: once a patient experiences the effect of a real drug, a placebo has the same effect if the patient thinks it is, or even might be the real drug.

So randomly mixing 1/3 active medication with 2/3 placebo (but making sure the first dose is active) is just as effective as 100% active, and with fewer side effects. This works even when the patient knows that 2/3 of the pills are placebos. The next one might be the real thing. This works with drugs that have a felt effect, like pain killers, anti-depressants, etc.

Maybe I should have made a joke about homeopathy instead?
