@Coyoty, placebos really work. But the recipient has to believe in them. The ethics of prescribing them is tricky, however. One clinically proven method however is this: once a patient experiences the effect of a real drug, a placebo has the same effect if the patient thinks it is, or even might be the real drug.
So randomly mixing 1/3 active medication with 2/3 placebo (but making sure the first dose is active) is just as effective as 100% active, and with fewer side effects. This works even when the patient knows that 2/3 of the pills are placebos. The next one might be the real thing. This works with drugs that have a felt effect, like pain killers, anti-depressants, etc.
