November 1st is All Saint’s Day, a day to honor those who have gone on to be in heaven.November 2nd is All Soul’s Day, a day to honor those believers who have passed on. There are two separate days for this because of the idea of purgatory where people could have died but not made it to heaven yet.

Why pray to the dearly departed? I know that some hold on to thoughts of them “watching over” them; but I would think that a painful way to enjoy the afterlife. I wouldn’t want my mother watching someone hurt me or someone else in the family, or watching a family member go through a serious illness, or depression, or addition..or commit a crime…or go through divorce…..get my point!

This concept of paying respects to the dead in this manner is just eerie. Remembering them in our hearts…yes. A whole festival….mmm…I think I’ll pass.

I think I’ll except what scripture says, that they sleep in wait of the resurrection at the second coming of Jesus.
