And some of us hated team sports. There are other ways to learn moral lessons. PE, combined with nutrition, should be for the purpose of teaching children how to use and maintain the body they will be in for the rest of their lives, not for being a farm system for pro sports teams, and the ones who don’t make it become fans on a couch eating junk food. There are plenty of ways to use bodies and minds besides chasing balls.
Where is the like button when you need it? Amen to everything Comicssfan said.Another thing is that in many states, schools are paid for in part with property taxes. I don’t feel like I should be paying for astroturf (which causes more injuries) for a high school field because the school board is too dense to hire a turf management consultant for one day to tell them how to fix a muddy field. And cheerleading is called a sport. Like synchronized swimming with chants instead of water. The ritualized tribalism of organized sports does nothing to teach students how to get along with other groups, only their own. And then, when they get out of school, they’re supposed to get along with everyone. No, it doesn’t work out that way. The organized ball-chasing model of PE should have been replaced after WWII, but of course sports fans have always called the shots, and chess or debating teams get no respect, where they exist at all. I have heard football described as 50,000 people who need exercise watching 22 who don’t.
