No one asks for or gives directions anymore, but in the days before GPS I recall several times in New England being told to “just follow your nose.” Anyone else ever get that? It was never good advice, by the way.
I answered a request for a motorist for directions a couple years ago ! The gps sent them on the shortest route between (call them point A B ) That route was a two lane ,twisting country road top speed maybe 40 mph .The fastest was the 4 lane highway directly between (with no turns) AB !
Where I grew up in western Missouri, we learned our directions, east, west, north and south and gave directions that way. I’ve found that most people do not know these. If I can see where the sun is and know about what time of day it is, I can still use that system. Terry’s directions were good. They weren’t like: “You go about five miles to the corner where Joe Smith’s barn burned down about ten years ago….”
I once asked for directions in Flagstaff to Oak Creek Canyon. I was told to hang a right at the last traffic light. Huh, how was I to know which traffic light was the last one?
Selling whiskey at the crossroads, people often ask me directions. It usually means they’ve been lost for at least a half hour. Go back the way you came.

Wait, she has a twelve-year-old son. Has she never taken him to the clinic?
