Frazz by Jef Mallett for November 07, 2016
Transcript:
Boy: What's this "Movember" mustache thing about? Mr. Burke: Raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer and other research. Boy: Think it'll still be going on when I can grow a mustache? Mr. Burke: In an ideal world, it won't need to be. Boy: Well, in this world now, there's always purple kool-aid.

Whoa….
this took me aback for a moment.
Is Jef Mallett so young he doesn’t know that, for many of us,
“purple Kool-Aid” refers to something rather horrendous?
It sure doesn’t make my mind go immediately to “Kool-Aid mustache”.

@Susan
I totally agree . Chocolate milk (or plain), now that’s the stuff for mustaches.

There’s two kinds of men. Those that have prostate cancer, and those that will.

“Drinking the Kool-Aid” is a well-enough known meme for public speaking. I agree that this one is a bit touchy, though I’ll bet it was unintentional.

In Jonestown it was Flav-R-Aid.

Does the fact that the Kool-Aid is purple have anything to do with the late Mr. Nelson?

I love the fact that so many go out and walk, run and do funny things to help with cancer research.
I hate the fact that the drug companies rake in huge profits on medications and treatments that our donations and taxes helped to fund.

While I remembered the reference when I read Susan’s comment, Jonestown did not really register for me when the “purple Kool-Aid” line was given by the student:
.
1. The kid is too young to likely have heard about or learned about that tragedy.
.
2. In my own recollection of the horrible Jonestown event, I do not remember if it was purple Kool-Aid, or just Kool-Aid that registered with me. I remember how the “drink the Kool-Aid” was bandied about as a crude phrase for a number of years, but do not really remember specifically it being mentioned that it was purple.
.
Overall, though, Movember is an interesting concept. One I have been participating in CONTINUOUSLY for several decades. I see no reason to shave, nor have I done so since way back when I was 19. The wife and kids have never seen my without facial fur.
.
Prostate cancer is a rough thing, that is certain. Movemeber can be helpful in the fight to try to help.

One of the local casino chains is having a “Mustash” (yes, spelled that way) match. They are giving away a lot of cash, and raising awareness at the same time. Until I read this strip, I did not know about the “Movember mustache” thing.

I’m pleasantly surprised that BigPuma hasn’t misunderstood this and delivered a totally inappropriate response centered around Malett “making sport?” of a serious topic.
I’m a bit disappointed that no one has commented on the kid’s gesture – He’d like to help in anyway he can, even faking a ’stache.
And yes, chocolate milk works best for that. Plain white is OK in a pinch I suppose. Remember the “Got milk?” commercials?
Big Puma, wherever you are : Thanks for keeping it shut today although I suppose the day’s young.
And remember Folks: Vote early and vote often!

Not I. At 83, it had to be removed because of enlargement blocking shedding bladder and kidney stones and restricting urine. There was no evidence of cancer. I am not “shooting blanks”, just clicking the hammer.

That was my father’s situation. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage just short of 90, having finished his weekly newspaper nature column.
