That Aussie bush creature is so bad and ugly and does such terrible things to people that nobody who has met one has survived to tell others how bad it is.
It can imitate the night call of any creature so in the dark anyone who is lost could be surrounded by them.

Frank: Don’t worry about it mate. Ya now know about the bunyip so you can be careful and safe. All ya have to do to avoid it is to know that it is Aussie tradition to kid (have on, play tricks on) people they like. The more ya cop some of this the more welcome you will know you are.
Ottod: Don’t know if the Aussie version has ‘Pockets’ (presumably you mean pouches). They are so ugly that it is hard to see how they would mate and therefore would not need pouches for their young.
May the more kind-hearted of this world unite to save the Yeti, Chupacaba, Bigfoot and the Bunyip from extinction.
Yep. I was referring to pouches, but I thought “pockets” was a touch less obvious. I pray no bunyips were offended. The answer to the mating dilemma is presumably the one that seems to have worked for other apparently unattractive species and a few people I’ve known: really cold, moonless nights during electrical blackouts. Strong drink may also be involved.
The bunyip seems to be the Australian relation of the chupacaba. The two species can be distinguished because the Aussie version has pockets.
The Bunyip doesn’t tend to associate with stories of hollowed out animal corpses with the blood drained. It’s a curious anomalie, but the “legend” of the Bunyip is more closely associated with the Yeti or Bigfoot.
If I nitpick, the Australian version of Yeti or Bigfoot is actually called a “Yowi” - but Bunyips are more an Aboriginal legend.
Allegedly, the only difference between the two Australian Myths is that the Yowi prowls around the bush, and the Bunyip sticks around waterholes and creeks.

If they’re really lost, they can always fall back on the old Boy Scout survival trick and pull out a deck of cards.
