It’s okay. As soon as you get them untangled and strung on the tree, you will plug them in and find that they no longer work, though they were operational when you put them away.
A few years ago I started winding our Christmas lights on extension cord holders, available just about anywhere extension cords are sold for just a couple bucks. No more tangled lights.

Wrap them around something when you put them away. You’ll thank yourself next year.
