Chuck is quite an advice giver all right. (How strange for an elementary school to disapprove sandals. Not in my school days, but I recall hearing about skirts being a little too above the knees was also disapproved.)
In my childhood girls had to wear skirts, even if they wore pants at home. This meant wearing tights in the winter, which are not all that warm and fiendish to struggle with when you are about seven and need the bathroom, and freezing at school, because the janitor wore long underwear and set the thermostats accordingly. Sandals at school? Unthinkable. Even sixth graders in wedgies or a normal heel that the teachers considered a bit high would be sent home with a note.
this is originally, probably, from around 1960 or so, when schools thought they were protecting us. when i was in high school, 58-62, we could not wear sneakers exc at guy class, and no denim, ever. it was different from now.
For Peppermint Patty? Go with a good pair of cleats, Sport.
On the other hand, I’ve known a lot of tomboys who could rock prettying up when they wanted to.
Chuck should giver her the options and let her decide. She can’t change school policy right now, but she at least isn’t stuck with a preppy school uniform she has to wear.
This strip sums up the male-female relationship fairly well. Patty was not calling for advice, she was just calling for sympathy. When a woman complains to a man, the man often thinks that she wants him to fix the problem. Not always so.
If I recall the original storyline, she also had to start wearing dresses to school instead of shorts. And the sandals were a special gift from her father, given to his “rare gem” as he called her.I had to wear uniforms in school, at that age it was a plaid jumper and a white blouse. You could wear pants underneath to walk to school on cold mornings, but had to take them off at school.

Sometimes, we say just the right thing.
Most of the time, not so much.

I often wore sandals during my senior year in high school, and no one said a word.

Unlike most women, I couldn’t care less about shoes. To me they are just an item of clothing.

She never said she wanted advice. She just wanted someone to talk to, and there he was.
