He’s missing the point as usual. No one told him to buy that fancy car (other than the salesman). Now he expects her to make the sacrifice. I get so tired of people, usually men, making arbitrary decisions without accepting any input, then later that decision comes back to bite them and they expect wifey to make sacrifices for his bad decision. So typical! Tell him to take a cab, Elly and sell that stupid car!
John does have a point, however. Elly can more easily get someone to cover for her if she can’t get to work than John can, since he’s a dentist and a sole practitioner. Who’s going to treat his patients if he’s not there?
Part time doesn’t mean you can show up if you want to. If you are scheduled, you are expected to be at work. However, if I remember correctly, this job was volunteer, which would put it in a whole new light.
While he was at work with MY car, I’d be at the dealership with HIS (obviously impractical) car, trading it in for a nice all-wheel-drive, safe family vehicle.
Lynn’s Notes--It was a good thing that I worked from home because our second vehicle, for awhile, was totally useless. It was too cramped for kids, too small for groceries; I could never see the point in owning a sports car. But…I’m not a guy. Maybe you look good if you’re “wearing” one.
One should drive the other to work, then themself to work. The SECOND the weather gets better, drive the impractical sports car back to the dealer and get something more practical. You don’t like it, John? Choose between the car and your wife!
What’s thought provoking – considering when this arc first came out – is John’s attitude toward Elie’s job vrs, his. It unfortunately, mirrors male attitudes to women in the workplace, even today.
I’m no role model for spousal behavior, but I always felt that my wives’ careers were equally, if not more, important than my own, and respected them for it.
Wow, he’s something else. I work from home but hubby and I each have our own cars and I can’t tell you how freeing that is. I pick my son up from school and run short errands without having to rely on my husband. Even working from home, you need your own car.
When push comes to shove, John’s job is more important. Had Elly been working as an electrician, a plumber, an ambulance driver, a nurse, or for the Civil Defense corps, then her job would be more important than John’s in the event of a natural disaster or civil unrest. To be fair, John volunteered to make sure her article got to the newspaper by the deadline; he did not tell her to forget it.
Whose job is “more important” is classic deflection. That’s not the issue. John made a deal. He made a promise in order to get that car. Obviously they discussed it before they bought it. He said he’d drive it no matter the weather. So, simply put, he needs to Man the hell Up and keep his word.
The issue is not which job is more important,or brings in the most money,it’s more about respect, and sticking to your word.John bought an impractical car for Canadian winters so it’s up to him to plan how to get to work in bad weather. He could take a taxi,or a bus,or Ellie could drop him off at the office. But no,he waits till the last minute, looks out the window, see’s a bit of snow, then whines that he can’t drive to work in his piece of crap of a car.( I drove one of those Datsuns back in the 70’s so I know of what I speak) It’s time for John to man-up in these situations and quit acting like a jerk!
John needs to get his butt on the bus. It doesn’t matter whose job is more important. You bought that ridiculous car, and now you’re whining because the white stuff is on the ground and it’ll hurt your baby. What a jerk!
Nothing new to add, with all these insightful comments, so I’ll just cast my vote for the “John is a jerk and will be sleeping on the couch (or maybe in his car) tonight” party.
Yeah, he’s technically correct here… but reminding his wife that he considers her job more trivial while taking her car because the one HE INSISTED HE BUY REGARDLESS OF PRACTICALITY just isn’t suited for this weather… he’s earned whatever he’s got coming to him.
Basically, he’s right, but it’s his fault this whole thing happened in the first place… so he’s wrong.
To each of them, their job is important. John bought the sport car, now he needs to buy a “winter banger or junker” just to drive in bad weather…cheap,,and he’ll still have the “young man’s” car come spring and nice weather. He has a good income, he can afford a few hundred for a banger..keeps the peace and they are both happy, and mobile in the winter snows.
SPOILER ALERT!Maybe John should call the office and find out if his appointments are coming in or not. And Ellie should call the newspaper and library to see if they’ll be open. This isn’t a little snowfall people, this is gonna be a big one!

Get the heavy equipment operator out of the steam shovel, John needs to get in so that he can dig his deep hole fast enough to keep up with his mouth.
