Laura: Here's a candle. Let's hope the lights come back on soon. Is everyone okay? Katy: It's kind of spooky, but I'm okay. Adam: Aaaaa!! Something hairy just brushed my leg!! False alarm. It was one of my bear claw slippers. Laura: Not helping. Katy: It's okay. The fear is keeping the hypothermia at bay.

Sure, when it’s all about partying and having fun, Nick is kept in the basement.
But now that they are cold and scared, now they want the baby to keep them company.

Funny, this used to happen two or three times growing up in 1950’s 60’s New England winters. It was actually kind of fun. Guess we were lucky to have gas heating and cooking. At least we could cook and stay warm.

A gas furnace requires electricity to run the blower. But the stove can still be lit with a match. I used to keep my babies and “critters” warm with the fireplace. I don’t know how people survived winters using only wood to keep warm, cook and have light! It takes a lot of wood.

I have a coal stove for just such emergencies. I can cook on it too.

If you’re in a well & septic area, your biggest problem is keeping your basement from filling with water once the sump pumps stops. Power failures typically accompany heavy rain. We have a transformer that changes the car’s DC to 120 volt AC. It’s far cheaper than a generator, and needs no maintenance.

When we had an extended outage, the only appliance still working was the water heater. We filled every large container we could find with hot water, put them all in the kitchen, closed the doors and were warm for a while, til we needed to refill them.
