I read a LOT as a kid but hated assigned reading. I was interested in Mythology, Fantasy and SF. The Forsythe Saga was the worst. Catcher in the Rye was the best.
I wished my mom was into reading. I have issues with reading but I try. School time only time I checked out books. Summer I did not know where a library was. My mom felt reading a waste of time. When in school never did write a report on a book. Never assigned reading. My sister is also not into reading she knows how to but does not want to. My dad bought book certain author after he retired from work.
I’m surprised I recognized those names- all of them- and the book, instantly. I hated that one. It was shorter than Ivanhoe, The Iliad and the Odyssey, but that didn’t help.
Most people are not writers and don’t want to be. I wasn’t much of a writer in HS. Only on my own did I decide to work on being able to write fiction and fact.

Third draft? I would hate to see Peter’s first two trying to making a report on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s famous work.

And a giant hedgehog named Spiney Norman keeps popping and saying, “Dimmesdale!”

I enjoyed The Scarlet Letter until we dissected it ad nauseum in high school lit.

If she wanted intelligent children, she shouldn’t have married a dolt.

The late, highly lamented Richard Armour wrote a tremendously funny synopsis of The Scarlet Letter in “The Classics Reclassified.”:
