Another year begins, God help us! It seems like art and literature are hurting since most people can’t tell a good piece of art from a crack in the sidewalk and most would rather have a root canal sans anesthetic than read anything longer than one short paragraph. Social media seems to be going down the old oval drain since most of the posts that I have seen recently are i-phone pictures of what the sender had for dinner.

The “literary” books are mostly pointless, a conclusion that I came to after slogging through a Jonathan Franzen novel where nothing much happened and what did happen seemed pointless. I guess the author’s picture on the dust jacket should have served as a warning since the author had an expression on his face as if he had just had an accident in his pants. The trouble is that anyone who enjoys the arts or reading is bullied into reading what ever is getting all of the current buzz, reads the damn book and then has to pretend that it was wonderful so people will think you are one of those in the know. I think that a goodly number of such books would be vastly better if every now and then something would get blown up.

Anyway, lets gear up for the new year – it looks like it will be a long slog to windward. Best of luck.

The irony of a comic that is not funny or original or well drawn critiquing other comics

Another year and this one looks like a red squall line in the distance coming closer an closer and not much we can do but prepare.

Thankfully, I feel responsible only for my own decisions.

Happy New Year Dana, After reading a few articles in Time and Bloomberg I think that the only fall back is to return to the old West and yell, “CIRCLE THE WAGONS!!” if that doesn’t work there is the other old chestnut, “Save the last bullet for yourself.” On that note I will apologize for not remembering the title of the Jonathan Franzen novel that I read, it could well have been his latest. I didn’t care much for it so when the neighbors cat was making a racket I threw the book at it. Unfortunately, I missed and the book landed in the trash can. A homeless guy rescued it and started paging through it but started retching uncontrollably. I guess I am revealing my “guyness” when I say that the ones I usually read are novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, John Connolly, Dan Brown, Steven King, Dean Koontz (especially the Odd Thomas series) and stuff by HP Lovecraft (long deceased). I just finished writing a middle grades book, “Miss Maya and the Bridge to Everywhere” whether or not it will get published is another matter all together. I hope that this will be a good year for you. There is a pretty good chance since, after the elections and all, there are a lot of “Worried Well” out there. Bon Chance.
