Bismarck may have been the most powerful man in Germany but he was jealous of that guy’s beard.

This is the first time I’ve noticed a picture in this feature that was either processed with a faulty scanner, or printed with a dirty inkjet cartridge.

The scanners in 1900 were not that well developed yet.

He’s being served by the guy with the red stripe pants tucked into his fabulous knee length boots. It both slims and shapes his figure.

2 URLs (copy each as one line):

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:German_Headquarters_in_Versailles._1870.jpg

has info and links that point to info about this painting (the lower right inscription makes me think it’s a painting rather than a book illustration; mouse over the image there to see who they are). So far, 2 works by this artist have been used here.

    http://www.gocomics.com/that-is-priceless/2015/12/15

has the prior strip (when I could still use hyperlinks).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s blog entry for yesterday (January 4, 2017), accessible by the Check Out The Blog! box in the right hand column; so, I won’t point to it here.

“Anything you can do I can do better…I can do anything better than you!…”

Irving Berlin version or Alex Jordahl version. Kind of works both ways if you ask me.
