COSTUMED CRIMEFIGHTERS ACADEMY – Online (for the duration of the emergency)Review Lesson #13: Shades of Gray (Areas). In the last few decades, there has been a new class of our profession that has risen, the anti-hero. This is a person who “falls into” the job through circumstances not of his or her own making, who has neither the inclination nor the temperament for doing good, but who does it anyway because he or she is in a unique position to do so. (Some of our more recent graduates have taken this path; refer to J. Logan and F. Castle, Class of ’74, and A.U. Rama [ Hellboy ], Class of ’93.) Such anti-heroes can be motivated by desires of revenge or simply because they see too much of their own unpleasant personalities in the evildoers they battle with. (“He reminds me too much of.. me.”) Our prospect above seems to have tendencies toward such a path, which raises yet another “red flag” toward any application he may make. This also suggests to us a past in which he has served – or attempted to serve – in the military. Note, please, that this is not the career path sanctioned by the Academy; we prefer our “do-gooders” to do good for its own sake, or for the sake of mankind. However, as it all leads to the same place – Veritas, Justicia et Libertas (“Truth, Justice and Freedom,” the CCA Motto) – we give them every material assistance and try to counter-balance the more… unsavory… aspects of their personalities.
If “super-heroes” existed in real life, they would be like this guy. They would have to be creepy lunatics, garishly dressed and have a very short lifespan.
