Actually, Pluto the Disney character made his debut in Disney’s cartoon “The Chain Gang” on 18 August 1930, but he wasn’t given a name until the 8 may 1931 cartoon “The Moose Hunt”, in which he appeared as a talking dog. The planet (now classified as a dwarf planet) Pluto’s discovery was announced on 18 February, 1930, by discoverer Clyde Tombaugh.

A contest was held to name the new body, and the winner was a suggestion from 11-year-old Venetia Burney, of Oxford, England; the name was announced on 24 March 1930, six monthe before the dopey dog reached the screen. Much as the Disney people would like to think they own everything in the universe, the celestial Pluto isn’t in their stable.
