Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for March 27, 1981
Transcript:
Roland: The junta, an uneasy coalition of civilians and comic-opera colonels, headed, curiously, by a former torture victim, Jose Duarte. Recently i chatted with Duarte about his two missing fingers. Mr. President, given that you yourself were once mutilated by the military, why are you willing to do business with them? Duarte: Well, it turned out it was ll just a misunderstanding. Besides, my people love me for my past suffering. I am one of them. Having been to the torture chambers, I know what it's like to live in the shadow of fear and pain. Roland: But isn't that really just a political gimmick, Mr. President? Duarte: You're tough, my friend.
