Get the most hideous tie that you can find, frame it, have everyone sign around the matting, and call it “The tie that blinds”. We did that for someone who left once.
if he used watches before retirement he would probably like a nice watch, but ‘nice’ is probably more than you would expect to spend in a retirement gift (if you don’t buy it for yourself)
