Person: Several more federal programs for the poor were scrapped today...concerned Congressmen were quick to explain. Congressman: Gramm-Rudman made me do it! Gramm-Rudman made me do it! Ronald Reagan: "Last night I signed a bill that raises the debt ceiling to $1 trillion. That figure can stand as a monument to the policies of the past, policies who, as of today, are reversed." Goodness! I said that? Person: Yes, sir. In 1981. Since then you've doubled that figure. Ronald Reagan: I guess that's right. Well, what's your point? Person: Well, Mr. President, a lot of people are now saying that you did it on purpose. Ronald: What? Person: Yes, sir. Some say you always knew supply side would be a bust. That you wanted huge deficits to force major cuts in social spending. That that was your real goal all along! Ronald: Gosh. Am I that smart? Person: Well, that's what we were wondering. Try to think back, sir.
