I once found a neighbor asleep over the steering wheel of his car, headlights on, driver door open. Fearing he had had a heart attack, I woke him, and he explained he had just driven 700 miles straight. Lucky to be alive.
I have one gear when I drive, and that’s forward. If you want to “Sunday drive” or sightsee along the way, then you don’t want to ride with me on a long trip.
I’ll stop for gas & potty breaks, and to stretch my legs but usually, that’s about it.
I do, on very long trips, stop, and take time to eat and relax a bit but I prefer to be on the road.
I will, however, when I get tired, pull over and rest, or have someone else drive while I sleep.
Did that distance and more back in the day – hop in the car at 8:00 or so; drive 4+ hours, get gas; drive another 4+ hours, get gas, use the facilities, and grab some grub to eat in the car. Repeat. Keep going until destination reached or it’s gotten past midnight. Same thing the next day, if necessary.
Back many years ago when I was young and dumb and in the Army I used to drive from Virginia to Wisconsin and back for a 3-day weekend. Approximately 750 miles. Did one trip from Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2 days; 1100 miles the first day, slept for 4 hours, then 700 miles the next day. Slept for about 12 hours after that. Now I pretty much limit myself to 8 hours of driving, ~500 miles, per day.
Years ago I drove from Wichita KS to Oklahoma City & back Fri night, then drove from Wichita to Waco TX & back the next day. The Waco trip was in a tow rig with a car on it. Never again.

At 60mph, that’s, what, maybe 13, 14 hours?

800 miles? Not really hard. Kick in the cruise control, put on something nice on the I-pod, take regular breaks and just cruise on…
