    The lady is Ingre’s wife, newly married at the time. The place is Ingres’ quarters in the Via Margutta in Rome, not far from where Alaux lived at the Villa Medici. This meme—the artist at home, enjpying the Bohemian life—became popular, with the artists running around painting each other’s portraits. The left-hand painting is now in the Musee Ingres in Montauban; the other one was in the hands of the London dealer, Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, as of 2004. It presumably is in private hands now.
