Back in the day, my elementary school always took school pictures this time of year. It also happened to be about the time of the first cold snap. Well, cold for around here. The cool, dry weather made my lips chapped, and I would lick my lips. Then the chapping would get worse and spread. My second and third grade school pictures showed me with a red rash all the way down to the top of my chin.

Thus began my addiction to chapsticks. I’m a purist, though. Not medicated, or flavored, or scented, or colored. Just plain, old, garden variety Chapstick®. Walgreen’s store brand is pretty good, consistent with the name brand. You can have Blistex, Burt’s Bees, Chapette, Vaseline… Hold on a sec… Ok, I’m back. Just talking about it, I had to dose up. …or any of the other brands out there. I just want my Chapstick brand. I remember, somewhere around 1980, Chapstick changed their formula. “New and improved” meant a softer texture and smoother application. I didn’t like it, and went and bought about 10 sticks of the “Good Stuff”. It lasted almost a year, but eventually I has to start using the new version.

Right now, I probably have a dozen Chapsticks distributed between my backpack, my Medicine bag, my nightstand, the medicine cabinet and the junk drawer in the kitchen. There might be an apocalypse, and I don’t want to be without.
