After consuming the potato salad yesterday, Elly’s next move is to talk to her next-door-neighbour Annie about eating the potato salad, while drinking coffee and sitting on outdoor furniture outside the house. That is certainly not high on my list of entertaining topics of conversation. “Come on over Annie. Let’s sit outside. I want to talk about this potato salad I ate last night.”
Both Farley the dog and Annie are wide-eyed and dumbfounded as Elly launches her excuse for not giving Farley the food she has been complaining about eating. She’s not watching her own weight. She is watching the weight of Farley the dog. Normally we get Elly with the goggle-eyed expression in the final panel, exasperated at something her family has done or said. It’s kind of refreshing to see that reaction on Farley and Annie’s face instead.
To me, Farley doesn’t look regretful in that last panel. He looks scared. Too many people dump their leftovers into the dog’s dish, and the US now actually has an epidemic of obese pets as well as obese people. If you think that isn’t a problem, you need to understand that dogs are liable to many of the same diseases that humans get. And most people don’t have health insurance on their pets. Try to imagine how much it costs to take care of a dog with heart trouble.
Signs of a bad pet owner. A little piece of fatty meat or something as a treat now and then is OK, but to give your dog (S) your leftovers as if they were a walking garbage disposal is wrong. Michael has the same reaction as a drug addict learning his dealer has been arrested or an AARP member being told social security has been repealed. He protests bloody murder how wrong it is to be wasteful where there is so much starvation in the world. Needless to say, Elly does not buy it, and the sweets are confiscated.
My mother used to make us sit at the table until everything on our plates was gone. My brother and I might sit there until bedtime, and if the meal wasn’t finished, we’d find it set out (cold) for breakfast the next morning. No fooling! “Waste not, want not” was the catch phrase of the day…and I never really did understand what it meant!
I would suggest it is a hold over from the Great Depression where food was scarce.
