Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for May 28, 2009
Transcript:
Barack Obama: I have to tell you, Rahm, I'm a little out of my comfort zone here. Why is this necessary? Emmanuel: All public officials have to put up with laughs at their expense, sir. It comes with the job. It's just another form of accountability. What people don't respect, they will ridicule. Obama: But what if I'm messed and tire up? Any do-overs? Emmanuel: No, sir. Satire's cold.

The first ones had the correct dates as well, people just couldn’t read the five as a five and thought it was a nine. Love the last panel. And I agree with the poster who said a Blackberry should be Obama’s “icon” It is ideal!

As the new CEO of two American car companies, maybe Obama’s icon should be a tire iron with 2 fuzzy dice.

i, too, like the blackberry idea. I’m just not sure how simple it would be to draw one in the tiny space above the white house.

I say go with the Blackberry. Or maybe a basketball. He won’t be CEO of two American car companies for long, because they won’t be car companies much longer, either.

When will the president remember the adage “Be careful what you wish for, you may get it” and that it applies to everyone?
BlueRaven over 15 years ago
yyy, he doesn’t need to draw the Blackberry over the White House, just by a podium when he’s having Obama speak to the press. Remember Bush I’s “points of light” and Bush II’s battered Roman helmet, too. Not to mention the Quayle feather.

well,i’m a canadian guy,but after 8 years of the horror the horror,i’m greatly optomistic.dudn’t mean we don’t need gb to keep potus on his toes.the choice of icon is a matter for long and careful consideration,i think. with best wishes all around.

My last panel says “But what if I”m messed and tire up.” Do you suppose that should be “tired and mess up”? Strange thing to see in a widely distributed comic, or am I missing something? Is everyone else getting it correctly? Clue me in here, people.

precisely that.he was tired and messed up.
or ebonics has really come a long way.

How do we know that Trudeau isn’t programming Obama’s Teleprompter?
turoc15 over 15 years ago
the horror ..the horror.
hee!

Ushindi, please refer to my previous post about the big O now running 2 car companies. The “tire up” comment will make more sense.

Rahm’s right in panel 4; abbreviated, but full length should be “satire is a cold take” in movie parlance. Like live TV (the old Steve Allen Tonight show; or anybody remember Soupy Sales? Ernie Kovacs?)
I like the BlackBerry icon; any other candidates?

Teleprompter icon.

the best idea i’ve heard is…pennies.
now that’s some change we can believe in. not to mention a nice tie in to lincoln.
oh and for our right-wingers out there, it’s not like pennies are worth all that much.

i thought the “messed and tire up” was just a spoonerism for “tired and mess up” to show that BHO had no chance to correct any errors he made. maybe i’m too literal minded.
