Oh you mean the Declaration of i-Ndepence!

@Gweedo Murray - sure nothing to be ashamed of - other than it’s the perpetuation of a gross misnomer. Like the pejorative nickname of the NFL team located in the USA Capitol - you know Washington Newer New Delhi C?

Jukeofurl, you need to take it up with the Indians Gweedo has met. I think the polite thing is to call people what they want to be called, not what some PC third party has suddenly decided they should be called.

“PC”-ness aside, my one problem with the “indian” label is the confusion of it. i haven’t met any natives offended by the title (technically, the only “correct” way to do it would be to refer to each tribe individually rather than grouping them together with a single label); however, if I were to say, for example, “I just saw a hot indian chick” the person I’m talking to may not get the correct mental image without clarification.

@ak4mc et al - I’m not PC. I just don’t like to see error rewarded -which seems to be the rule in the USA. Native Americans may call themselves what they will. They had names for the tribes well before others got to them. Mostly they translated to the word “people.” AS for the word I was referring to “redskins,” it was coined in an era when it was a slur, the equivalent of nigger. It is shameful to have as a team nickname anywhere much less our Capitol. Speaks volumes.
