For those not in the know: Larry Craig was one of the republican senators from Idaho. He was arrested 6/11/07 for lewd conduct in an airport bathroom. The news of the arrest broke sometime later. He was caught because the person he solicited was an undercover officer staking out that bathroom after complaints of lewd activity. From the officer:
“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. … The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his left hand under the stall divider several times, with the palm of his hand facing upward.”
Craig eventually pleaded to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct+. He subsequently filed an appeal claiming he didn’t understand what he was pleading to, but his appeal was denied multiple times. he also had to deal with other claims regarding his sexuality, all of which he denied. He finished his Senate term despite attempts from others in his party to get him to resign, but did not run for relection in 2008.
