I came across a chess game once where it was obvious that one player was better that the other and was actually gloating at his obvious win as the other player considered his next move. I looked at the board and then asked the gloating player and asked if he minded if I kibitzed. He was so sure of himself that he told me to go ahead and I told the other player to take the guys rook. He looked at me and said, “if I do that, he’ll take my knight and then I’ll just have my king.” I told him, “if you do that he can’t win.” the player considered it for a second and then took the rook. The first player jumped on the knight with his bishop and started dancing around. “Thanks, you just gave me the game.” “No, I just madee sure that you can’t win.” “Oh, we’ll see about that,” he sneered. I had to leave for a few minutes and when I came back the first player was staring dejectedly at the board, he looked up at me and said, “I couldn’t win.” “I know, when all you have is a king and bisihop against a king you end up with a stalemate.”
