Leeches have appropriate uses in modern medicine. They’re not the catch-all panaceas they were purported to be in the Middle Ages, where disease was supposed to have come from an imbalance of the 4 “vital humors”, black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood.

That’s close to the truth. Leeches (reminds me of the rich and powerful and their effect on society) were used until not that long ago.
