Sometimes, I look at all the years I spent in college, grad, and post-grad, and I wonder if I wasn’t just wasting my time by pursuing that particular field. On the other hand, I doubt that I could have succeeded in any other academic or “professional” field, given my severe lack of talent and ability. And I know that plumbing, electrical, and auto mechanics are way beyond me.
My other half and I felt this way when our middle son who went off to college in search of an engineering degree told us after freshman year that he was switching to an art major. Talk about a shock! Three states away for an art major! But we’re coming to grips with it, he’s happy, and he can still be successful depending on what he does with it.
My boys both opted out of going to college in favor of working. I thought a summer of carpentry in the southern sun would change their minds but it didn’t. They’re never going to be rich, but they didn’t incur a lot of debt and the job security is about as good as it gets anymore.
College isn’t for everyone. A trade school (or vo-tech) is often cheaper and offers a better chance at employment. I learned a good trade in the army that has served me well since I got out.
Oh, Arlo, you’ve been a really good dad. We all have moments we’re not proud of as parents. Gene apparently doesn’t hold it against you. But your final comment does indicate some pretty good self awareness.

Find a job doing something you like and you’ll never work a day in your life. It works. I did it. And I’m having fun every day.
