Not vast distances really. Parameters of existence maybe. But a new means of calculating “distance” between universes. You would need a new nomenclature to represent it. In most of them near you there would be minor variations like say certain changeable signs for hot dog restaurants for instance. That may be the only difference. Others may have other lesser ones like kind of car lamp.
Douglas Adams postulated infinite parallel Earths, some totally different, some so similar that the only difference is one leaf on one tree in the Amazon. BUT, Ford Prefect warned Arthur Dent that even that little difference would, over time, be enough to drive him nuts!
Here’s something both Christians and Atheists should ponder: What if God had created thousands of “alternate earths”? My group has speculated that our souls may end up going to somewhere else other than Heaven or Hades. There’s another rule of science: “Everything goes somewhere”.
Soooo, somewhere I might actually be a Giantshetlandpony? Cool. 8-)
The thought that there might be a world where we got our act together and stopped trying to ‘solve’ things by being the better ‘compassionate’ bully, well, good for them.
Danae, the possibilities are endless. Love the smiley face with hearts on her shirt, nice touch.
Though “anything” wouldn’t happen which is annoying that they do that in the Simpsons an Rick & Morty. From the most to the least probable. “Sliders” did a good job over all. Though they slipped in throw away versions that would not work—-ever.
Only one per universe just as one of you and myself unless I was never born or died earlier. I nearly died in 2006. A definite point of breakage of my time line if it is possible to have died that would have been it.
I did like Kieth Laumer’s view of of A-lines, their Common History Dates and areas of the Blight where various levels of destruction caused by the accidental misuse of the temporal energies used in the Maxoni-Coccini coil that allowed humans to cross the dimensional barriers between universes.

Did I do that stupid thing at a party in Universe 97? Yep. How about in #98? Even worse.

For me, the alternate Earth classic is “What Mad Universe” by Fredric Brown.

I read it in high school and I’m 76 now. I don’t think it would hold up well since the pulp SF (STF?) mags are all dead.
