With this one we see Gordon Mayes still as the troublemaker kid, which is the way he has been presented up to this point. Gordon fills the role of the stereotypical sneaky kid character. In the early days Lynn Johnston indicated the reason for this was due to his poor parenting and poor schoolwork. In this respect he was unlike similar characters such as Tom Sawyer, who got into trouble because he was smarter than the other kids or Eddie Haskell in Leave it to Beaver, who was well-groomed and was very polite to adults to disguise his mischievous nature.
