I use bread knife for cutting cardboard too. Perfectly suited for the job…long and the teeth evenly serrated with just right height. Electric knife is even better – less muscle power. Another would be the box cutter but it’s quite sharp so I never felt safe wielding it cutting cardboard which is corrugated, making cutting uneven and jarring.

Obviously Michael does not have Elly’s good bread knife or the sound effects would be “BREAD KNIFE BREAD KNIFE BREAD KNIFE”

Wood fibers are very abrasive. I have cut wood blocks on a vertical mill, and it would dull the HHS cutters much faster than cutting soft steel! Cardboard dulls blades quickly too.

And hitting one of those large staples can damage the knife.

I’ve broken knives while cutting up cardboard. There’s too much blade exposed, there’s too much torque on it and the metal is too prone to breaking in two. It’s not the right tool for the job. Newer box cutters have a setting so only the tip of the blade is exposed – which is all you need to cut the cardboard AND it doesn’t go much further beyond the cardboard to cut the stock inside the box. This is perfect if you work in a kitchen or store and are dealing with a lot of cardboard boxes on a daily basis.

This happened. The fridge box was a hit and my knives were hit-on more than once!

Elly needed a new bread knife anyways.

Elly, you no longer have a “good” bread knife.

I rarely go ballistic about anything…BUT… a sure way to set me off, is to use one on my good Henckels for anything but what they’re made for, – superlative kitchen knives.

I also have a Global 7-Inch Santoku that is off limits to everyone except me ( after an inattentive relative almost took a finger off with it ! )

I regularly stole my mother’s good sewing scissors. Being left-handed, I needed sharp, tight blades (left-handed scissors were unheard of.) Those were the only scissors in the house I could operate.
