John has decided to hit the “Horrible things I said that my kids will remember about me for the rest of their lives” button. There are some things you just don’t say to your kids, even if you are telling the truth.
In our case it was "you kids get to spend the week with Grandma, I have a “Business Conference to attend and Mom is coming with me.” They spent the week at Mackinac Island. Supposedly on the Company’s dime, but as I got older it got fishier. The only camp that we attended was Scout Summer camps and those were either ones that I asked to attend since my troop was going, or ones I attended because Mom was one of Girl Leaders for her troop that was attending a local area Summer Session. I never understood this Send the Kids to Camp that was the running gag when I was growing up in the ‘60s. Ala Allan Sherman’s “Camp Wanada”.
Now that’s something that the average self-absorbed kid needs to hear. Any “wounded inner child” neuroses will be superseded by the benefits of tough love in the long run.
Some parents have already have their children well versed in living. Not just enjoying the fruits of others labor. The only way to get them self sufficient and develop a good work ethic.
Wait until your old enough for them to make you get a summer job Mike. You’ll realize just how much of a vacation camp was in comparison. And it’s less chores than you’d get if they sent you to your Aunt Bev’s farm for the summer.
In 1944 I was put on a train at Grand Central & traveled to Portland Maine. The a ride in a ‘38 Ford woodie station wagon to East Waterford for a 2 month camp. In the 50’s I worked there a counselor. Trips up Mt. Washington,& Canoe trips on many big lakeswere the time of my life. Later my 2 brothers came to this camp. What a wonderfulgrowing up experience gift for all of us.

Good one, John. When my daughter was growing up, summer camp was a way to keep us from killing each other over the course of a hot summer.

Is it a co-ed camp? At Mike’s age; that might change his outlook. Even better; a separate sister camp with in easy hiking distance of the boy’s camp.

A couple of weeks? I remember being for a camp for six weeks in the Adirondacks when I was 12.
