“Brush and elbow grease” mostly; sometimes an environment-friendly chemical cleanser.
The new energy saving light bulbs are not supposed to be covered. Almost all fixtures still require a cover, so they actually burn out faster than the old bulbs.

As my compact fluorescents burn out, LEDs.
