It’s actually very logical. The stuff “smells like … it’s not for eating. You eat that, you get sick.” If you roll in it, then you will smell like it. In other words, you will smell like “… it’s not for eating. etc.” Hence, in theory, anything that might be inclined to eat you will smell you and conclude that you too will make it sick if it eats you. You’re saved!
Dogs roll in smelly things to mask their own smell. It’s a predator strategy. My personal favourites: dead badger the day we are planning to get back in the car for a 4 hour trip home (let’s just extend our visit another day, shall we?) and dead carp washed up on the beach. Yum.
