I have to do the exact same thing!
I’ve found that I need 3 balls to play in the yard with my dog. She takes the first one with her to get the second one. I throw the third, so I can go collect the first two and start throwing to the other side of the yard.
I could have thrown balls and sticks all day for my dog and she’d still have sat there giving me strange looks.
