So I have to ask… exactly WHAT has happened that FINALLY nudged Tracy to act on the elephant in the room?
Was it the fact that he knocked over a bank while Tracy was there with B.O. and Gertie? Not likely, he brushed that one off without even batting an eyelash.
Was it that Blackjack has been on a streak lately, knocking over banks seemingly at will? Big ol’ NOPE to that one too.
Was it the fact that Blackjack not-so-abducted Tracy’s daughter-in-law? That COULD hold some water but I don’t think so. Tracy dismissed THAT too.
I think its something more ‘behind the scenes’.. like Tracy finally realized that he has let a dangerous Federal Criminal walk free for far too long!
Gratitude only gets you so far, and apparently its made Blackjack a very VERY wealthy criminal since Tracy has turned a blind eye so often.
I am certainly in the minority here, but Im STILL hoping that mayor Armstrong and/or Wendy Wichel gets wind of Tracy’s ‘favoritism’ towards Blackjack and calls him out for it.
To paraphrase the legendary Ricky Ricardo.. “TRAAAAACCCYYY YOU GOT SOME ‘SPLAININ’ TO DO!”
This stake-out is cool. I have one small nit-pick, just because I have been a fan of Dick Tracy for so long that details are important to me. Joe and Mike both have said in interviews that they are big fans also, and that their favorite period of Gould’s work is the 50s. In those days, Tracy almost always wore his hat, even inside. Sure, he took it off at home, or in Church, or visiting a bereaved widow, etc. But on a stake-out, or even at HQ while working in the lab, he had his hat on. Maybe it was pushed back at an angle, but it was on his head. I’ve been noticing that Joe has Sam with his hat on, like today, but Tracy takes his off. it’s a small thing, but it was part of what gave the strip it’s own unique “feel”. Just an observation from a long-time Tracy fan.
I can see it coming Sunday. BJ and Winston show up bustin’ into the bank and instead of calling for a SWAT backup, Tracy and Sam crash BJ’s party all by themselves. Remember, BJ and crew sport Tommy guns, probably .45 cal.
@ Don Bagert……….. good question! If the bank has more than one branch, how does Tracy figger this is the one? Because he got the bum’s rush? Maybe the bank’s president is going to try to blame the extra quarter mil on Blackjack. Poor BJ; like Rodney Dangerfield said, “he don’t get no respect”.
What kind of stake-out is this?! Did Tracy and Sam bring along a hot plate? Otherwise, what is Tracy using to heat that old-fashioned percolator coffee-pot?
And since when does the Chief of Detectives of the city of Tracyville sit stake-out? Okay, so this is Tracy’s own comic strip and he can do whatever he and Mike Curtis want in it; but it is still a false note and disturbing to me. And the point Rick Smith raised above about Response Time from Tracy and Sam’s upper-floor location seems valid enough, even considering Dean’s reply.
Without doubt, Blackjack and his gang, featuring Winston, will attempt to rob the Fleischer S & L branch where Frank Hickman is the Dirty Banker. But how the action will play out among the bank and its employees (including security guards and of course the Bank Manager, Hickman), Blackjack and his gang, and Tracy and Sam and any other police responders, is still problematic. There might yet be some surprise-element lurking in the script….

Do you think Tracy is actually using Blackjack to uncover the embezzling going on at Fleischer?

Having to get down to the ground floor and out the door is going to massively cut into responding during the 3:38 of Blackjack’s robbery time.

Tracy needs to upgrade his coffee maker.
