    Meh… There’s no reason for him to step sideways, he can reach the cookies from where he stands. No resaurant would have a hole in its floor like that and still be in business.

    Look how the wood in the floor is pointing. It looks like the big guy punched his way up through it to get the cookies.

    Perhaps the previous customer to pick misfortune cookies didn’t fall through the floor, but something came up through the floor and grabbed them.

    Some Asian restaurants do have a reputation for acquiring their “meat” in unconventional ways…
