It is a sampler! Everything is portioned bite size so you get to sample a variety of foods rather than having to choose one entrée. If you do not like something, you throw away only a miniscule amount. All cultures enjoy buffets!
My wife’s Austrian cousins came over here about 25 years ago. Their favorite place to eat was the Golden Corral. As implied by the strip, they’d never seen the like at home, although one of them had studied in Chicago and was acquainted with the idea.

What I find puzzling is the inaccuracy of her statement. When I was in India, most restaurants I went to were buffets, and you could eat all you want.

The first buffets I saw here in the US were smorgasbords. Smorgasbord is Swedish, so it’s possible they have buffets there too.
When my wife and I had our wedding celebration in Seoul, the place where we had our reception had a buffet.
