I’m guessing Dave Whamond has had a taxing (as opposed to taxiing) flight next to a squalling infant in the recent past.

God! This is my version of hell. Screaming babies have always aggravated me, now it even hurts my ears.

My sympathies. My son was a colicky baby, it was the hardest few months of our lives, so far. He’s 9 years old and any issues we have now are a cakewalk compared to the colic stage.

I have no children of my own. But I am an uncle five times over, and a great-uncle six. And I enjoy that relationship. I think that on balance it is just as well that I had no kids.

But I certainly see and understand why people have them, beyond the simple biological imperative. The rewards they provide can be great, and the love and warmth they can bring cannot be obtained in any other way. By the same token, they can completely break your heart. There is no great reward without great risk.
