How much bad weather does it take for Dad to finally give up a camping trip?

There is wilderness and there is craziness. Being in the wilderness is not about the craziness of a vacation in a downpour. It is about some inconvenience and learning about nature and who we are and how we cope. It should not be a crisis situation. However, Dad is optimism over elements. And the funnies must be funny. Is this funny or uncomfortable?

I’ll bet Hobbes’s tuna sandwich is nice and dry.

Bringing canned goods on a camping trip is a BIG mistake. Freeze-dried is the way to go, and has been since it was invented 40+ years ago.

Dad is warped and needs treatment in a nearby institution.

I remember camping in rain like that. Or worse, because it was usually in April. Neither of my parents minded the rain, as long as there were trout to fish for. Plus, Dad seemed to enjoy building multi-level structures with ropes and tarps. The trick was finding a place where the rain wouldn’t puddle and run beneath.

Since Mom insisted on hauling along a Coleman stove and fuel, we had hot food – pancakes, fresh trout. There is nothing like ham, baked beans and brown bread – all from cans- when you are cold and wet. Years later, those are still comfort foods to me. I keep a can of each squirrel away in the cupboard – behind the tuna.

A few years ago about 5 or so Chef Boy Ar Dee changed the sauce in their products. And their stuff is now inedible, I in my car keep an ammo can stuffed with canned goods, skillet, mountaineering stove and other comestibles including canned bread and other meats.A mix of small canned and freeze dried in my bugout bag. I like the freeze dried as you can eat it on the run without water.

If Dad is into camping so much why wouldn’t he have brought a tarp to at least cook under in case it rained?

I find it puzzling when people have their umbrellas up when it’s just raining lightly.

I will never understand this world.

Actually I do like canned cold ravioli once in awhile. (And I mostly eat very healthful, natural food.) And I’ve camped in the rain many times. I was a girl scout for 8 years, we learned to be strong. I really love Calvin and Hobbs.

At least this will make for an interesting story to share in the future.Funny, when people are gone, moved away, etc., these are the moments you often bring back to mind and laugh about.
