I hope someday to be one of those authors whose memoir plummets off the bestsellers list after he’s exposed for making up too many of the “facts” about his life. If only because that would mean I spent at least a little time on the bestsellers list. Or wrote a memoir.
If I can’t expose myself to that by being on the bestsellers list, I certainly put myself at risk of getting busted every day by not trying to hide the fact that my writing, like all writing if you ask me, is essentially, shamelessly, autobiographical to some extent.
And I am not the best at remembering facts. But if you put it in the right context, I can sure remember the truth.
Like I told my grandson after his first game, I never won any championships and I don’t remember the games I won nor the one’s I lost. I don’t remember any of their scores. But I do remember the thrill of competition, the camaraderie of working as a team and the parties after the games. I also remember some of the hits. I remember them better than the runs or the touchdowns. At the moment it is all about the winning and the losing, but years later, it is all about the experience.
