As I recall it was a means of getting boats off sand bars.

Abraham Lincoln’s patent is a patent for an invention to lift boats over shoals and obstructions in a river.1 It is the only United States patent ever registered to a President of the United States.23 Lincoln conceived the idea of inventing a mechanism that would lift a boat over shoals and obstructions when on two different occasions the boat on which he traveled got hung up on obstructions. Documentation of this patent was discovered in 1997.

A small correction: Theodore Roosevelt was never awarded the Medal of Honor (unless it’s been awarded since Ken Burn’s did his 7-part documentary on the Roosevelts). He lobbied for it but never received it, because they said he was never in the Army. His Rough Riders were all volunteers and he didn’t take orders from anybody. In fact, his charge up San Juan Hill was severely criticized as being foolhardy and unprofessional. His eldest son, General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., did receive it, however, for bravery on the Beaches of Normandy in June, 1944. ’At 53, he was the oldest soldier in the Invasion Forces. Severely hampered by arthritis and his WWI war wounds, he and his men took Omaha Beach in less than an hour (probably because winds and tide had driven them 2000 yards east of their original landing point), before moving inland; but he died a month later of a massive heart attack.

    Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders weren’t Teddy’s…and they didn’t actually ride anywhere. So I wonder if they were Teddy’s to begin with…or rough… :D :D :D

I’ve noticed it before, but today it’s really jarring- three of the facts today were sent in by Dan Paulun, W. Lafayette, OH.
