Having been through a similar, but somewhat less drastic, situation, this is a heartwrenching place to be. You love your pet like a child, but you realize they only have so long to live; and how many of us have $6000 lying around? I’m not showing this series to my wife on purpose.
We spent $1800 to try and save the life of one of our kitties and he passed away the day after he was operated on. Given the choice to do it all over, as much as we loved the little guy, I’d have had him put down and saved the money, especially since the company we financed his treatment through seems to be run by a bunch of heartless bungwipes.
MisngNOLA, I so understand your position. When our “Ladie” and “Motley” passed away. We realized, as senior citizens we could not financially or emotionally have another pet. If we could not pay [even with pet insurance] to save our little pets, then we should not adopt them in the first place. Of course, we all know that Cagney will “survive” this story line, however, it is a very sensitive episode which brings back sad memories for most pet owners.
She’s a single mother with a (dangerously) worn out old car, a big hold house, and a young son to take care of. There are times logic has to take precedence over emotion, however difficult it may be. Just don’t discuss it in front of the dog!
For sure get a second opinion,
I had a vet try to stiff me once when I brought in a dog with an ear injury.
He told me major surgery to repair or the dog would have a severely malformed ear,
I decided a gimpy one eared dog would still be just as lovable.
Dogs ear healed up just fine with a home applied bandage and you couldn’t tell it had ever been hurt.
1 week ago today we lost the most loving little female chi named Baby. We couldn’t determine if someone let her out or stole her and she got away from them. I found her body on the street 200 feet away from home and her 4 six week old puppies. Take your apology and shove it!
It cost me $150 to find out my cat was terminal. I should have just kept her comfy at home. I suspect any pet insurance you can buy is like any human health insurance you can get on your own: garbage. This is a rather heavy topic for a fairly lighthearted comic.

Pillowcase and a shovel in the backyard: free. For everything else, there’s Mastercharge.
Heartless I know, and my apologies for it.
